If all you are trying to do is fade to gray or black, just
modify the pixel values of an opaque source image and copy
that image to the screen (or back buffer).  I don't see why
you would need to do this is a translucent operation at all
(maybe I'm missing something here...).  If you can do this as
an opaque operation, you will completely avoid the bottlenecks
I talk about above.  Note that your implementation of this
could require that you manually read each pixel, you will want
that image to be unaccelerated for the reasons above
