I do actually need to set the clip region to any arbitrary shape where using the bounding rectangle would not be sufficient. Maybe there is no solution to this problem.
I am surprised that this doesn't just work by setting the clip region to the shape being rendered. I understand why it doesn't but someone should have thought of this case and provided a solution.
