I just reverted to earlier drivers for the Matrox card, and all is OK now.

The J3D.org FAQ doesn't mention any issues with Matrox cards, but maybe the
comments about nVidia TNT apply:
"As newer drivers are released, new buggy implementations of the extensions are
used, causing the problems to appear when you update drivers."

Although the crashes occured when not doing anything arduous, such as selecting
a JInternalFrame containing my Canvas3D.
