I havent seen this announcement posted here yet, so...

On Feb 24 (During VRML99) Platinum announced they are giving their VRML
software to the Web3D Consortium for release as open source software.

The full press release is at: http://www.platinum.com/press/1999/open3d.htm

It says they will release:
 Cosmo Worlds 3D authoring tool
 Cosmo Player Web browser plug-in
Cosmo PageFX a tool for designing depth, motion, and interactivity in
Web graphics
Cosmo Code an advanced visual development toolset for Java
 WorldView a high-performance VRML 97 plug-in for viewing 3D environments
on the Web
WorldView for Developers an ActiveX component that brings the power of
the WorldView platform to Windows application developers

The intervista pages (http://www.intervista.com/new/3dpublic.html) discuss
the support issues. It also says:

>The products affected by this announcement are: Cosmo Player, Cosmo
Worlds, Cosmo
>PageFX, Cosmo Code, PLATINUM VRCreator, WorldView, and WorldView for
Developers.
>Details of the program will be announced by May 31, 1999.

Note the inclusion of VRCreator, which was not mentioned in the press release.

Since most of this is probably C/C++ code, I'm not sure what the direct
effect will be on the java3d community. It would be really really nice if
Cosmo's view control stuff made its way into a Java3D implmentation.
