Bill Day runs the Java 3D Loader Archive site, and it lists all known
loaders (including ours).

You'll find two VRML 97 loaders on the list. The one I wrote only
supports a small amount of nodes. I'm planning on transitioning to use
the VRML-Java 3D Working Group's loader.

As for Max, I asked Autodesk about the file format, and they haven't
released any info on it. (At least not that I'm aware of). I've
talked to people who looked at this format themselves when Max first came
out, and it's quite complicated. They save all user actions in the
file, so that they can be undone later. That makes for some pretty big
files. Imagine loading a T-REX, deleting it, then loading a cube and
saving it. The resulting file contains the T-REX, the delete operation
and the cube. (At least that's the way it used to be).
