Don,
I am presently investigating the use of OpenGL for result visualisation of
engineering problems, (with the need for speed). I am primarily developing
with C and Fortran, and now JAVA3D.
The software implementation of OpenGL is too slow, so I have just bought a
Diamond V550 (PCI 16MB) card for my system to improve speed. The results
are very impressive using OpenGL (coding with 'C') with a 3~4x increase in
speed over my old card. However, as you point out the JAVA3D implementation
does not work correctly.
I have tried two drivers:
- the one supplied with the card: version 4.10.01.0239 and
- the latest download from Diamond: version 4.10.01.0255
Both fail to correct the problem. Therefore, could you tell me which 'old'
drivers you are you using....and where can I get them?
(I will be interested to see any other effects the old drivers have. The
speed difference between the above two drivers was roughly 14% when using
'C' - the newer one being faster).
If you would like to test my Java application on your system (with old
drivers) you can download it from:
http://www.wsatkins.co.uk/asas-aqwa/download/aqwa_sequence_java_download.htm
(The image shown on the download page is of 'alwest.aqp' found in the
'examples' folder after installation, and was captured with my old card. My
new card removes some of the elements of the boat).
Much appreciated,
Andy Phelps

Subject: Re: [java3d] Problems with Viper V550 and GIF size
Simon,
I am running my Diamond V550 graphics card with old drivers from
Diamond. These drivers allow the Java3D examples (ConicWorld,
SphereMotion etc) to work correctly although the Glase test
programs do not.
If you can email me a sample program with gif file and explain
what I should see, I will test it on my system for you. It would
be useful to know if this is another example of the same problem
which is making the TNT based graphics cards useless for Java3D.
Many Regards
Don
