Hello Sebastien,

I agree that a Java3d .flt loader is important if Java3d is to be used by the
simulation community. I am not aware of the existence of one. Currently I am
using a converter from Performer-supported formats to VRML97 (.wrl) which can
then be loaded with one of the VRML97 loaders. The converter was written by
Glenn Waldron of WareOnEarth and is an SGI binary. It is freely available
from http://www.wareonearth.com/freesoft.html. It uses the Performer loaders
to read the file and produces "100% VRML 97 compliant output". It will also
optionally convert all the texture files to PNG or JPG and claims to produce
efficient VRML.

I can imagine that writing a J3d loader for .flt format would be difficult
since the Performer loaders are likely to only be available under IRIX, and
maintaining your own loader independent of Performer development libraries
would be costly given that OpenFlight format is likely to evolve on a regular
basis. Perhaps SEDRIS could be used to read the files and therefore provide
the desired insulation from changes to the file format. If I get time (seems
unlikely now) I will investigate the use of SEDRIS. Meantime, I am
considering developing a Performer file server using RMI that would run
remotely on an SGI and use the above converter to translate the files to VRML97
on demand, with local caching of these files on disk.

If you find a better solution, please let me know.

Later,
-Gary

Subject: [java3d] loading .flt files in java3D

hello.
I would like to know if Java 3d can load .flt files (it is one of the leading
3D file
format developped by multigen. It is the main professional file format for
visual
simulation, often used for large terrain database. Used with performer, opengvs
...). flt

files are binary.
Thanks.
Sebastien Richard
