Make sure that you are using the correct screen size ("Desktop Area") and
color depth ("Color Palette"). I have noticed a HUGE difference in
performance, notably with the FireGL 1000Pro, when switching between
different modes.

A good way to figure if the raw OpenGL acceleration is performing ok is to
run some of the OpenGL based screen savers. By switching modes and running
the screen savers, you should be able to tell if one is significantly
better.
