Do use use DirectX6.1? Only Win98, second update, is shipped together
with DirectX6.1. Otherewise u should install DirectX6.1 in order
everything to work correctly. If u did install DX6.1, then possibly u
should download the latests drivers for you video card (actually u can
do it as the first step, since DX and OpenGL drivers are different for
different video cards and usually created by video card manufacture
itself). For instance i have quite modern video card (ATI Rage128), but
until yesterday textures under NT haven't been rendered at all. As soon
as i downloaded the latest update for the drivers everything started to
work just fine.

Whatever it is in your case, it concerns hardware problems, not Java3D
itself.
