The key to your question lies in understanding
that there is more than one company/group providing
Java 3D implementations. At least three entities
have implementations that I am aware of:
 - Sun's Solaris and Win32 Java 3D runtimes.
 - The jFreeD impl for various platforms supporting
GNU tools and OpenGL Java bindings.
 - SGI's IRIX implementation.

Blackdown also has a Linux port, but I do not
know the latest status on that.

Each of these support different versions of the
JDK/runtime; at least jFreeD does support some
JDK 1.1.x releases. Also, HP has licensed Java 3D
but to the best of my knowledge has not yet shipped
or provided for download a build for HPUX.

To get the specifics on the Java platform versions
and OS versions supported, I would recommend visiting
the homepages for each of the implementations
above. You can find links to Sun's, jFreeD, SGI's,
and Blackdown's from the "Related Sites" section
of the Java 3D Loader Archive at:

Hope this helps,
