what chipset is 3DLabs VX1? might be dated.

its likely that you would be better of using a more recent part.

like an nVidia card. geForce is available at under $500, so is the 1
generation back TNT2. TNT2 is likely to be heavily discounted now that its a
rev back and may be very close in price to the 3DLabs offering and its very
likely it is superior in terms of rendering features and fill-rate. nVidia
has a rep for having fairly good OGL drivers and they have the top chipset
around with geForce.

also worth considering, in no particular order of goodness:ATI Rage128,
Matrox G400, 3DFX Voodoo3, and the latest S3 part ( Savage2000 I think ).
these would depend on the state of their OGL driver before they could be
recommended to fit the below request.
