It is probably only noice  but:
on Win NT 4
j3D opengl 1.1.2
I have seen great performance improvements and no problem at all when using
the jdk 1.3 beta.
Which I now use as my standard: I have not tried j3d 1.2 yet => though it
could be a little too early
