And now, the moment everyone's been waiting for.....
errr.....
Well, maybe not :)
Anyway, as quite a few people know, Steve Pietrowicz and I have been
working on a Java 3D community site for a while now. We've finally put
it on air a few hours ago: Take a look at
http://www.j3d.org/
[well.... c'mon..... Start cheering now will ya!
Awww... don't be like that.]
Please be a little careful as we are bandwidth challenged at the moment
(64K ISDN from Oz).
The idea of this site is that it be maintain by us - the community. For
the moment, that requires a knowledge of HTML and CVS and preferably
some Java 3D :) If you would like to help out on any particular area,
drop me an email. Because this is an open box that houses other web
sites, I can't let everyone at it for the moment, but there's plenty of
room for some help. The only area off limits is the FAQ which Steve and
I wish to maintain for the moment. Also, the machine itself is really
underpowered (P120/16MB) so an interactive site with lots of scripts is
currently out of the question too.
[ How 'bout one little cheer then? ]
Apart from the FAQ and the start of a tutorial that I'm writing, we're
relatively short on good content. We wanted to get a basic site running
and then open it up for comments by everyone. Eventually it is intended
that we will go somewhat along the way of jini.org by allowing personal
space.
In particular, it would be really nice to get people to write up
tutorials on how to do "things" with Java 3D. For example, an article on
creating splined surfaces, or articles on collision detection for games
or these sorts of things. Personally, I would like this to be a real
community oriented site where all the really good developers put out
interesting stuff for the rest of us to use. You know, the really
practical sort of things for application - source code and all.
Basically, anything that gets posted to J3d-interest as code to solve
problems would also find a nice place here.
[ ummm... not even a mumur.]
Finally, one element that I really want to get up there is a public bug
list for J3D. That is, considering that we have a really hard time
getting any good information out of Sun here that we as a community
should maintain our own. Then, every time Doug mutters "That's fixed in
J3D 1.x" we can mark it as such on the public list :). I find that this
problem of keep track of what bugs have been mentioned is one of the
bigger source of questions here.
Finally - Ken Tallman gave Steve and I a list of people that had
contacted him over the last year or so about Java 3D. While Ken provided
no further information other than email addresses, Steve and I would
like to contact you all shortly to see if you are willing to help
out/send code etc to help with the site. If you people get in touch with
us first, that would be wonderful!
[Perhaps Sir would like a waf'er?]
BTW - if anyone knows the person that own java3d.org, please let me know
because I'm sure he's domain squatting trying to get some dollars. Glad
he was dumb enough he didn't realise there's a shortened version j3d
that many people use :P

"Look through the lens, and the light breaks down into many lights.
Turn it or move it, and a new set of arrangements appears... is it
a single light or many lights, lights that one must know how to
distinguish, recognise and appreciate? Is it one light with many
frames or one frame for many lights?" -Subcomandante Marcos
