_A_ normal Peter.  When you have a surface, then any line which
is perpendicular to the surface (ie straight up from the surface) is a
normal.

You need this for lots of things.  If you don't have normals provided
for a surface, then the system can't work out colours and so on.  In
Java3D normals are taken at the corners of a triangle or other
surface component (these are vertices).
