I'm using Java3D 1.2 Alpha. I have the specification for 1.2 beta and nowhere
in this document I can find a solution for my problem.

New for 1.2 is, however, the posibility to reference exernal vertices for a
Shape3D object instead of copying them. Does this mean I could have
inter-Shape3D vertex sharing with several Shape3D object in a similar way to
the way IndexedGeometryArray allows vertex-sharing inside a single Shape3D? But
I would still have the problem with a lot of Shape3D objects (several
thousands) which also limit performance if I understand it correctly.
