Desiree,
We have some benchmarks results posted on our web site:
http://www.tornadolabs.com/News/news.html
We always welcome new submissions.
They are not definitive, or all that scientific, but should give you a feel
for the relative performance of some of the popular 3D cards.
As for performance tuning in general, the documentation for Java 3D is
sparse and still evolving. In general keep the number of Shape3D's in your
scenegraph as low as possible and keep the number of Appearance objects as
low as possible. A good idea is to read up on OpenGL/DirectX performance
tuning if you have any experience with that - all those tips will apply, but
you will have to read between the lines a little to see how they map into
Java 3D optimizations.
Sincerely,
Daniel Selman
