Couple of issues here.
.3ds file format is an old format by autodesk which is not the native
format of 3DSMax(.max) It doesn't support much more then geometry.
The best way I have found to get models out of 3DSMax is to use VRML. It
will preserve alot of the features from Max but certainly not all of
them(no procedural textures, multiple textures per object, per-face texture
mapping)... there is no loader for .max that I know of.
