The whole point is that it is _initially disabled_, you have to enable it before you can use it. You can enable the console using the IE Options Dialog, or using the registry. The easiest way is to use the Options Dialog. Here is how: - In IE4/IE5, from the "Extras" menu choose "Options". - The Options dialog appears. - Click the rightmost tab labelled "Advanced". - Scroll down the list until you find the section "Java VM". - In this section you should find three options: . "Enable JIT Compiler" . "Enable Java Console" . "Enable Java Log" - Switch on the last two options. - Quit the dialog with "Ok". - Important: restart IE! --> if you enabled "Java Console", you will now find a new menu entry "Java Console" in the "View" menu. --> if you enabled "Java Log", you will find a file "c:\windows\java\javalog.txt" after you start an applet. In case you have trouble finding the Options sheet described above, you can also use the attached .reg file. Simply double-click on it to enter the information in your registry (have no fear, it only modifies the Java VM entries.). After that, restart IE and you should find the console and the log file at the places described above. And please don't answer "no there isn't a java console in IE4" because I am absolutely 100% sure that there is! The only thing I can imagine is that the crippled IE versions (like the "AOL browser") do not allow you to enable the console, but this has NOTHING to do with standard IE4. If you do not find the console, look again. If you still don't find it, take a closer look. Still no console? Search again! It must be there! What, you searched the whole day and can't find a Java Console?? OK you have a shitty OEM-IE and you should upgrade to a "true" IE4 or to IE5. Many questions I saw on the list (like "how can I load a local file from my applet", "what is the difference between IE and Netscape", and "where is the Java Console") have nothing to do with Java3D. I find that people having problems with this kind of stuff should look for help elsewhere. I am confident that a thousand answers for all these questions can be found easily by searching archives.java.sun.com and forums.java.sun.com (NOT the j3d list/forum, look for an "applet" or "browser" forum).
