Augmented/Virtual Reality Online Forum

Dear Colleague,

The fields of Virtual and Augmented Reality are nowdays exploding. However
these
fields are still young and no standard methodology and product seems to be
recognized yet. As a consequence, the development of applications is slown
down
because the learning process can only be done through sparses conferences
and
litterature reading.

To enable faster communication between scientists working on the fields of
Augmented and Virtual Reality a mailing list has been created: ARforum.
([EMAIL PROTECTED] view subscribtion down this email)

Because VR has been around for a long time and the name is very generic, we
thought that the list should be mainly axed on AR technology where a lot of
challenges are still present. However, VR questions/answers that are
directly
extensible to the AR field should be absolutely considered. The goal is to
avoid
to make the discussion list too general, which will make it very fast
borrowing.

Less try to solve real problem together. The subjects that we would like to
touch
are for example:
-what are suitable hardware components corresponding to a category of
applications?
-is there a software architecture that is common to any AR/VR applications?
-could we push the design of an operating system to be developed to
integrate
seamlessly AR and VR concepts (3D desktop, input and output VR devices)?
-what does mean precise registration?
-what is the best components available for building wearable

The kind of subjects we would like to avoid would be:
-did anybody tried to put a HMD on a horse?
-My company sell the best software available for VR
...

AR is a very interesting field because it requires multidisciplinary
expertise to be
achieved correctly. For this reason we would like to have at least all these
categories
of scientists participating to the discussion:
-computer scientists ( software architecture, graphics programming, ...)
-electrical engineers ( tracking harwdware, computer architecture, ... )
-optical scientists ( real human viewing model, lens design, ... )
-psychologists ( human studies, human/machine interface, ... )
-mechanical engineers ( mechanical design, tracking systems, ... )
-chemists ( olfactory display? )
...

HOW TO JOIN
The list is served by a commercial web site (listbot) which gives us a way
to
subscribe and unsubscribe automatically and look at the archives. The cons
are that email message will be followed by a little commercial message that
can be easily ignored. Another advantage is that the email are restricted to
100 Kb which will avoid that people flood the memory of a host user with
their
mail. Users in need to show large documents will have to make them available
through FTP on their web site for now. In the future it will be interesting
to
create a VR world where we could share such documents and work in
collaboration through the web.
