Interesting developments elsewhere in the graphics community. Several major digital media companies announced a new group called "Khronos" that is planning to develop a new API called OpenML. OpenML is meant for media technologies such as sound and video streaming, but what's interesting to us ( the Java3D peoples) is that it will included extension to OpenGL for integration into 3D apps. The companies include: 3dfx, 3Dlabs, ATI, Compaq, Discreet, Evans & Sutherland, IBM, Intel, S3, and SGI. My question to Sun is, where are you in this picture and what is your stance on this effort. I would say most of us use the Java3D that is built on OpenGL. But I know that here at Full Sail, my management has wanted to get video into our virtual worlds ever since they saw it on an SGI years ago. If OpenML makes that easier for OpenGL apps, what effect,if any can I expect in Java/Java3D?
