Yes there is a standard, Check with the USGS
http://edcnts12.cr.usgs.gov/ned/default.htm

Here's a dataset for Grand Teton National Park.
http://edcnts12.cr.usgs.gov/ned/samples/teton.htm

The data maps used to be free, but now it looks like the government is going
to charge us to access the work we payed for in the first place.

DED, DEM, NED are some of the acronyms I've come across. Once you start
researching however you'll find all diferent kinds of mapping data
available.

Subject: [JAVA3D] Terrain elevation

Hi,

We need to build a 3D terrain representation for a demo. Does anybody
know of a -- hopefully non-classified -- standard to represent elevation
on maps? Has somebody built a reader/renderer for such standard?

Any hints/suggestions/sample-code are most welcome.

Thanks.
