so env var CLASSPATH is ok to be empty?
Or does Evil Windows blank it out?
if so then it is maybe done in autoexec.bat
also there could be some hidden .ini files lurking about!
now ... onto more (from my stupid reference pt.) obvious details.
You have UP-TO-DATE anti-virus software?
Can you format c: -r (or something like that) then reinstall 98?
why?
because basic system files of "98"  can be corrupt-no-good-...
I say start from VERY beginning .. REINSTALL WIN98.

just my stupid 2 cent.
