My first guess is that the texture does not have enough detail and
that=A0the filtering that is being performed to magnify the texture is
causing these effects.=A0 What does the original texture image look =
like?=A0
Email it to me if you would like me to take a look...

Also, you should consider breaking the geometry up into separate =
Shape3D
components.=A0 I believe this would allow J3D to differentiate between
terrain that is in the view area and nearby and terrain that may be
behind the viewer or far away.=A0 J3D may be processing the entire =
terrain
for each frame though much of it is not in the view.=A0 Just a =
suggestion.
