I only started following this thread recently.  Perhaps the question
was already answered.  In any case...

After JavaOne I tried to get the EA version of Webstart to work with
Java 3D.  It was clear that Webstart couldn't do anything about j3d
not being able to reliably install itself, so i just tried to get
Webstart to execute a j3d app.  After several iterations with the
Webstart folks we finally got it to work with a J3D app, but it was
ugly.  In the bigger picture, it was unclear whether the webstart or
the j3d folks were supposed to take the initiative on making the two
technologies work together.  When I asked what was going on between
j3d and Webstart at the Siggraph j3d BOF the answer was that j3d was
implenting a superset of webstart (or something to that effect), but
specifics were not forthcoming.

Perhaps someone from the j3d team could comment on the status on
"solving" the j3d installation problem, in general, and the interplay
of Webstart and j3d, specifically.
