Although this is not truly a Java3D issue I feel moved to respond to the
earlier note from Haroldo Pereira.
You are right that JBuilder 3.5 is significantly slower than JBuilder 3.0.
3.5 fixes some major problems with 3.0 (it doesn't crash as often and its
rmic mechanism works much better) but it performs code scans (or some
similar CPU-cycle-burning function) at uncontrollable intervals and can
be irritatingly hesitant. Other irritating features of 3.5 include a file chooser
that only lets you add files to a project one at a time, memory leaks,
the rather unfriendly way it automatically modifies a project configuration
with no warning to the user, and erratic failures of its make process to
compile all necessary modules.
I have complained to Inprise about these problems and they responded
"thank you for your opinion". About the same level of support as for JBuilder 3.0!
Having purchased support/maintenance from Inprise, I have to say that their
response to bug reports is very poor. Other companies may issue patches
and new versions on a regular basis (look at Sun and the JDK!) but Inprise,
sadly, does not, nor do they support effective users' groups, as far as I can tell.
Although Inprise released a version of JBuilder 3.5 for free download, I don't
believe that they ever did so for version 3.0. Find an old 3.0 on a shelf somewhere???
Unfortunately, someone who bought 3.0, then upgraded to 3.5, apparently cannot
give you their 3.0 CD and continue using 3.5 without violating the license.
Maybe if enough customers complain about the bugs and speed then Inprise will fix
the problems and JBuilder will eventually become a solid IDE. Having used both
for extended periods, in my opinion I would say that 3.5 is preferable to 3.0 because
of
its improved stability.
Despite the bugs and the slowness, JBuilder 3.5 is not bad, in my opinion.
One very nice improvement in version 3.5 is that switching from one JVM to another
is MUCH faster and much more painless. Using it with Java3D and frequently
switching versions of the JDK and/or Java3D is very easy.
One thing I have noticed is an unfortunate interaction with the default configuration
of Norton Antivirus. NAV will perform frequent scans of .class files, slowing down
JBuilder substantially. To fix this problem, configure NAV to not scan .class files.
THIS CAN MAKE A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE IN SPEED! This is definitely
a problem with 3.5; I am not certain about 3.0. Actually, the problem affects
many other things, such as using the Windows explorer to copy .class files.
I don't think you really need every class file you produce scanned for viruses
every time you create, copy or move it!
Obviously, there are lots of other Java IDEs available, including those available from
Sun, Symantec, IBM, etc. Unfortunately, when the trade journals review complex products
like IDEs they tend to give them all top marks. Only when you stress the software,
using it for weeks at a time on large projects, do some of the quirks and weaknesses
show up. It would be very helpful to have practical comparisons of the IDEs as
experienced in real development projects.
