David,
Gamma is applied in the digital to analog conversion process for your
monitor, therefore the raster memory has the "darker" image while your
monitor has the "lighter" image. I did a search on "gamma and monitors"

Note that when I used to work on SGI systems I was always frustrated by the
difference in the brightness of www pages / images from other systems.
