Thats hard to say. Because I always assume that I am making a programming
error, I have a tendancy to persue that train of thought for a long time.
Then once I am convinced it is a bug I try to work-around it, which can take
more time. When I finally find I am cornered and stuck, then I either have
to wait for a new release and move onto other things, or rearchitect the
code so it uses an entirely different approach. Like I could use switch
nodes instead of alternate appearance, but they are fairly heavyweight and
just not as clean as using the alternate appearance. Certain bugs, like the
fact that multi-texturing corrupts the tex coordinates of alpha blended
objects, cannot be worked around at all and so I have stopped all
development on thigns that require that technology (like vegetation, etc).
While I do get frustrated, I sincerely think Sun is working hard to address
issues and resolve problems and so I have faith that the decision to use
Java3d for our graphics was a good one.
