We are doing a similar thing, and have investigated the following:

1.  Store the file on disk and reference it in the DB.
2.  Wrap the vrml in a serialized object and store this as a BLOB on the DB.

Both have advantages and disadvantages.
1.  Destroys the integrity of the storage (changes can be made to the file without the DB knowing about it [bad]). However, the files timestamp can be recorded and checked as a minimal safeguard.  This also frees up DB resources and results in faster retrieval of the file.
2.  Is more elegant and safe, but more intensive for the DB.

(We haven't decided which route to go yet).
