I've noticed this problem and found a work around, so I thought I'd write
everyone to report my findings. Basically, there is a huge performance loss
based on the size of the image used as a texture for a Background object.
The larger the image set to the Background object, the slower and slower the
frame rate becomes.

However, by creating a flat objects in the far distance of your scene and
applying the image as a texture to these objects, the problem is completely
circumvented. Has anyone else noticed this to be true? Is this possibly an
existing bug the Java3D team is working on?
