 YES ! ! !   YES ! ! !   Y E S ! ! !   Y  E  S ! ! !

 Web3d is _ NOW _ making your dream come true !

  -  Open Source VRML Loaders
  -  Open Source VRML Viewers

 These are _ cross platform _ solutions:

 Windows, Linux, Solaris, and others (the mac is a maybe, on OS-X?)

 With these you can load & view, control, network -- do VR stuff --

  1)  In a browser  ~~~  or  ~~~
  2)  In _ YOUR _ stand alone application ( NO BROWSER ).

  Either one, _YOU_ pick, _YOUR_ choice, do both, have a ball.

 You can, ( with a newish machine with a good card ) do :

  -  FULL SCREEN 3d
  - FULL hardware acceleration ( FULL frame rates of your monitor )
  - FULL access to the hard drive for read & write
    ( within a secure protective security model * )
    * ( ~~~ if - if - if ~~~ if the user grants that permission
    ----- which can be granted once when installed )

 Isn't that  **** EXACTLY ****  what you want ?

 |  I'm not interested in the web [ using a browser ]
 |  I'm interested in virtual reality ...
 | that can be shared over the internet -

 Great, that's music to my ears ! Are you trying to seduce me ?

 I agree, we shouldn't be ... and I am _NOT_ limited to the browser,
tied to a single, or just a few OSes, or CPUs. Comrades we are then!

  I can now run the _same_ VRML files _ without change _ :

  1 ) in a stand-alone Application, with NO BROWSER, with my code.
  2 )  in a browser with a plug-in ( I use Cosmo -- IE & Netscape )
  3 )  in a browser with NO plug-in
  4 )  in  Windows, Macintosh, Linux & others -- the Web & More --

 I'm using a version of an old VRML loader -- circa 1999 --
it only works with a subset of VRML-97, but it is enough
to run H-Anim Avatars -- with multiple "Gestures" ---
VRML animations triggered by VRML Sensor Nodes.

 Smarter Groups of people in Web3d have done More than me.

 | | Are you developing for the Web ?
 | |  Perhaps dropping the plug-in is best ?  [ I asked ]
 |
 | No, not the web, the internet.
 | Yes, stand alone application. No other way to go.

  Great, people are doing that now, links to them have been posted:

 Sylvain ...

 " Those require a HUGE download !?! " -- is that your concern ?

 Sylvain ... What if some ___ really big ___ company, put it all ...

 ... all on a CD ... and sent out __ MILLIONS __ of those CDs ...

 with ***  EVERYTHING ***  people needed ...

 what if a really big company, had __ thousands __ of
 cable modems subscribers ...
 what if a really big company had __ TENS OF MILLIONS __
 of internet subscribers and sent them all CDs with all that stuff ...
 the program, the libraries, the drivers, all on a CD ... for free ...

 What if ... say ... AOL-TimeWarner-Netscape-RoadRunner ...

 ... did that ...

 Wouldn't that solve your problem ?

 Wouldn't that let you :

     do Virtual Reality -- Networked -- across the Net ?

  ~~~ without ~~~ the limitations of the plug-ins ?
 That could happen, it could happen soon ...
 Perhaps a ~~~ new ~~~  book would be both exciting & liberating:
