Hi John;
Thanks for the helpful comments. Unfortunately, I'll have to work with this
graphics card for the next few months at least. It was helpful to have a
benchmark figure for the performance improvement I can expect once I upgrade
the hardware I'm working on. Thanks also for the graphics card
recommendations. Fortunately, for this period of my work, performance is not
going to be an issue, but in future it will.
All the best,

Subject: Re: [JAVA3D] Slow start-up time for simple Java 3D applications
Karen,
We've created some virtual worlds that are "non-trivial" and the start
up time problem is not magnified. I would consider it acceptable.
Your hardware configuration is below what we'd consider "bottom end" for
doing 3D work. Actually your processor is acceptable but if you replace
the Matrox G100 with a GeForce 2 MX (less than $150) you'll see your
framerates skyrocket! We've tested with several Matrox G200s and with
the right driver we can obtain some hardware acceleration. I'm not sure
if you can get any hardware acceleration with a G100. With a GeForce 2
MX you should see framerates that are more than 40x faster than what you
are getting now. I know this issue isn't what you wrote about but I
thought I'd comment anyway (before you become disappointed with Java
3D).
