It doesn't sound like SimpleUniverse is adding the node.
>From your description I can't tell whats going on. If you can put the
scenegraph generation part of your code up then it might be possible for
folks to take a look and see whats going on. Be sure to trim as much
non-needed code from the example. You may find that just that exercise
alone gives you a solution.
