VRML & plug-in --> dead end ... as _ YOU_ describe.
VRML & Java -----> TV set-top boxes, PDAs, $$$, the future.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  I'm sorry you went down a dead end with the plug-in method.
  I'm hoping that you will join us with newer technologies in the
newer and growing markets.
  This Web3D group is developing VRML / X3D loaders to solve
these problems, the work is well under way, join us, have fun.
  They are portable, powerful, safe, and do Standards Compliant VRML.
$50 Million Dollars, Motorola, Sun, & the US Army
----------------------------------------------------------
| Openwings, the proposed architecture, uses Sun
| Jini and Java technologies that will enable the
| Army to "plug-and-play" situational awareness
| systems into next-generation C4I infrastructures.
|
| The project is a joint research and development
| effort conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Army.
| Motorola and Sun will develop Openwings as a
| non-proprietary, open specification using a
| community-process model similar to the one Sun
| uses on the development of its Java technologies.
|
| "With Motorola's systems integration expertise and
| the ubiquitous-connectivity capability of Jini
| technology, the armed forces' next-generation C4I
| network can function as an efficient mobile computer
| system that gives commanders a clear operational
| advantage on the battlefield," said Thomas Kreidler,
| president of Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc. "This
| next-generation, network-centric solution will
| increase the flexibility, efficiency and overall
| capabilities of the armed forces C4I architecture."
|
| Sun's SPARC workstations and the Solaris
| operating environment currently run most of the
| Army's TOCs. With the integration of the new Jini
| and Java-based architecture, the C4I networks are
| scalable and able to meet future defense needs.
|
| SunConnect is the only open architectural framework
| that allows organizations to develop and deploy
| secure, high availability, high bandwidth
| channel-based services and solutions. By leveraging
| Java technology's "Write Once, Run Anywhere"
| capabilities, organizations can extend existing front,
| middle and back office capabilities across the
| network while also integrating new services from
| partners and other third-party providers.  ...
|
| SunConnect architecture is deployable on any
| hardware platform, since it is based on
| open-standards like CORBA, HTML, XML and Java
| technologies.
  If you live in an area served by AOL-TimeWarner-RoadRunner
( as I do ) ... you can get that technology in your cable box ... soon.
Not the stuff that explodes ... but the 3d ... networked ... with Java.
|  I'm currently developping a quake like on Blaxxun Contact using
|  Java for interactivity.
|
|  I'm impress by the quality, it doesn't look like VRML !
  You're using VRML EAI with Java ... good ... I've done that too ...
it's safer than VB / ActiveX / .dll ... that is * too dangerous *.
  I'm glad you're using Java ... consider Java3d ... don't reject it till
you've seen it ... I think  you will be impressed ...
  Motorola & IBM make the PowerPC that Powers Apples, the
GameCube (soon to be released), and tv set-top boxes.
  My VRML will run on my TV & my neighbors ... with my Java ... soon.
  If you add neat-o "proprietary" extensions to your VRML ... it will not.
