Hmm hard to tell but in my experience so far they are very slow in DirectX
compared to OpenGL seems to me it's not an accelerated support for it
in D3D (or a very pure one).

I think you can do some nice things. As I hope to show soon :-). But I
haven't used them for direct rendering though yet.

Best beginning point for you would be to look into the RasterDemo provided
by the Java3D SDK.
