i don't really understand why you let all your normals point downwards? maybe
you want them to point inward?
you can also let java3d the normal calculation if you use the normalgenerator class

or maybe it is just a implementation bug of your opengl library
I noticed that the microsoft opengl driver doesn't clip right so you get some other
color shading (when clipping occurs (in your case when you zoom in fully)
maybe this bug is only with quads , I don't remember in detail anymore
