Hello everybody. I am very pleased to announce that DALiWorld Beta 1 is now publicly available from our website, http://www.daliworld.net. Modeled on the diverse habitat of the Indonesian Ocean, DALiWorld is a virtual ocean distributed across millions of computers, inhabited by artificial life that is able to swim through the network from machine to machine. Each DALiWorld community member receives a "plot" in the virtual "environment" and can create artificial life to live in DALiWorld. After the first week, DALiWorld has already achieved thousands of downloads in over 22 countries spread across six continents, and has been featured in Wired Online, BusinessWeek Online and on TechTV, among others. DALiWorld is written completely in Java, and it uses Java3D for its graphics engine. All fish within DALiWorld are physically-simulated, articulated rigid-body models, rendered as skinned creatures, complete with weighted deformations to the 3D meshes. On behalf of DALi, I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to everyone in the Java3D Interest Group that has contributed of their time and knowledge to help us work through the technical challenges we have faced thus far in this project. Special thanks goes to the Java3D team, especially Michael Schulman, Doug Twilleager, and Kelvin Chung, who were extremely helpful and very responsive when we ran into various snags. I hope that everyone enjoys the product!
