Ok just in case anyone else in the future gets this problem
The solution is
An imported Shape3D object does not necessarily have a TexCoordGeneration
object. therefore no textures get placed on the object.
Never ASSUME anything..... Im learning
Why arnt Shape3D objects always made with default TexCoordGeneration
objects?
beats me!
