We were using this same technique.  Unfortunately this used to work
(Java 3D 1.2) but is now broken in Java 3D 1.2.1.  We worked with Sun a
bit and they fixed some bugs that were crashing it but they have not
made it so it would actually work as desired.  We'd love to see this
fixed ourselves!
