"Core Web3D" by Walsh and Sevenier. Topics include VRML 97, Java 3D, X3D
and Mpeg-4. It is NOT free. It seems to be the only recent book on the
subject.

For free stuff you have to troll the Web3D consortium site at
http://www.web3d.org
