If you are using microsoft windows you can do the
following trick. I use it to make up quick
presentations of screen shots for computer training in
PowerPoint or for forwardeing a picture of an error
dialog to a help desk.
click PrintScreen to copy the image of the whole
screen to the system clipboard.
Click Alt-PrintScreen to copy the image of the window
or dialog box currently selected. (That's the one with
the dark blue bar at the top indicating it is
selected.)
Then open MsPaint which is usually under accessories
in your Start menu.
Resize the white defualt canvas down to something less
than the object you just copied into the clipboard,
and hit control-V or edit-paste to paste the clipboard
contents onto the MsPaint canvas.
You can save it as a .bmp or bitmap file. Then convert
it to jpg or gif so you can resize, reduce file size
until you start to lose clarity. The bitmap won't lose
clarity. Delete it when you are done to keep your hard
drive form getting clogged.
Later versions of windows such as Windows ME support
saving the file in other file formats. Saving as a
bitmap saves the whole image, every bit. .gif and .jpg
files do a compression where bits are scrunched which
cause the loss of clarity.
I have found that the MsPaint program can be a handy
dandy clipboard painter canvas for all kinds of
multimedia uses. And its free and easy to use.
Simplicity is wonderful sometimes.
Best wishes,
Charles
