Hi, Apologies if this is off-topic...
We're putting together a project where we plan to use Java 3D for animated visualisation (that will be synced to audio file playback) - the project will not actually begin for another 6-12 months but we need to finalise some details now. We're wondering what the best hardware platform to use would be from the following options (in terms of performance speed, number of Java/Java3D bugs/issues, etc): 1. a Sun workstation (model?) 2. an SGI O2 or similar 3. a fast Windows PC + quality graphics card 4. other....Linux? we would like to use stereoscopic display (e.g. CrystalEyes or a 3D monitor), and perhaps 3D input devices/force feedback controllers. We would also like to use Xj3D or similar. Can anyone recommend a setup that works really well? For additional reasons we would prefer to use an SGI setup, but I guess there's some cost of being behind Sun's releases for Solaris and Windows. Is SGI Java3D performance good? Of course we may end up using more than one platform, but if we were to invest in some equipment specifically for this project we would like to make sure it is spent on a system that works well! Thanks, Richard. _________________________________________________ Dr. Richard Polfreman Music Department Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences University of Hertfordshire College Lane, Hatfield, Herts.
