That's not my understanding. At least the developers in Sony's
Architecture labs have a native OpenGL layer that talks directly to the
hardware. I have quite a number of friends/acquantances there and in
particular the Blendo team and they are showing some extremely
impressive hardware performance (written with OpenGL of course) and have
spoken about it before.
