Justin,
        Adding the following lines to GearTest.java (comes with Java3D
demo) works fine on my machine :

        PolygonAttributes pAtt = new PolygonAttributes();
        pAtt.setPolygonMode(PolygonAttributes.POLYGON_POINT);
        look.setPolygonAttributes(pAtt);
