Title: RE: [JAVA3D] ANNOUNCE: Book - "Java 3D Programming" online now

Daniel,

I did a quick read of the first sample chapter ("What is Java 3D and is it for me?") and I must say I am impressed with what I have seen so far in just 9 short pages.  I am sure that even this first chapter will be helpful for new Java 3D developers. (I certainly could have used it a year or so ago)

I was particularly pleased with the comparison of Java 3D against low-level APIs, and the discussion of performance issues.  Covering these kinds of topics up front (instead of ignoring it until later) will be a definite time-saver for new developers.

My only complaint is that some of the content is already outdated, e.g. referring to JRE 1.2 when we now have JRE 1.4, and "At present it does not appear that Microsoft will be shipping any JVM with Windows XP." (which we already know to be true)  Of course, this can be forgiven, knowing how long it took to get this published.

Justin, perhaps you can point new Java 3D developers to this sample chapter, on the intro page of the FAQ (www.j3d.org/faq/intro.html).  That will help answer a lot of questions asked on the list.

Thanks for your efforts, Daniel.

- Mauricio

Subject: [JAVA3D] ANNOUNCE: Book - "Java 3D Programming" online now

All,

http://www.manning.com/selman/

I was starting to think that the book would never be finished... but it is!

Close to 3 MB JAR file with example code (GPL license), two chapters online
as PDFs for free (the rest for purchase, cost redeemable against the print
book) and the publisher working on putting the ENTIRE book on the web in
HTML format (free, gratis and for nothing).

I'm excited by this addition to the community library and I hope you enjoy
the finished product. Of course I'm waiting with baited breath for your
comments!

I also hope that you will support close to a 3 year endeavor (and the
publisher's decision to put it all online for free) by purchasing the book
if you like it.

Sincerely,

Daniel Selman
(one relieved Java 3D programmer)
