New Candian CAVE, the Worlds Newest & Best with Java3d
  ------------------------------------------------------
| A unique feature of the center ... is the ability
| to create 3D models of biological systems
| (e.g., genomes, organs, cancer cells) using a
| Java 3D API-enabled Sun FireTM 6800 server
| with a CAVE (CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment)
| walk-in virtual room often likened to Star Trek's Holodeck.
|
| In addition to the 20 CPU Sun Fire 6800 server
| running on the Solaris 8 Operating Environment
| equipped with 20 Gigabytes of main memory,
| the COE hosts five terabytes of Sun StorEdge
| T3 RAID 5 disk arrays

| Canadian scientists have opened a powerful
| computing lab ... The $3.7 million
| University of Calgary facility is
| a step ahead of the handful of other
| virtual reality labs used in such research
| because users for the first time can build
| models on their own computers, rather than be
| tied up for days or weeks programming at the
| site, officials said.
|
| Scientists, wearing 3D glasses in the
| 10 foot by 10 foot "cave," get a 270-degree,
| larger-than-life projection of the smallest
| parts of our biological makeup, to the point
| of being able to stand inside a strand of DNA.

| the U of C is launching the Sun Center of
| Excellence for Visual Genomics a bioinformatics
| facility that puts Calgary scientists
| at least __ two years ahead of the pack __
| in research capabilities. ...
|
| A pivotal feature of the new centre is a
| __ fully immersive __ (walk in) display environment,
| with four projection walls.
|
| This Java 3D technology-enabled CAVE
| a first in the world will immerse scientists
| in three-dimensional models of biological
| systems, including cells, tissues and entire organisms.
| ...
| These computer models allow scientists to
| step into a virtual, 3D human body,
| says Sensen. This allows us a much more
| intricate understanding of human diseases
| and complex biological systems, thereby
| accelerating the pace of life-saving research
| and reducing the development time for new drugs.
|
| Total investment into the Sun Center of Excellence
| for Visual Genomics to date is more than $6 million.
| Funding partners include Sun Microsystems, Fakespace Inc....

| "Sun chose the University of Calgary as a COE for
| Visual Genomics in recognition of Dr. Christoph Sensen's
| plans to build a CyberCell, a 3-dimensional
| representation biological system with a Java-3D enabled
| CAVE, using a SunFire 6800," says Dr. Stefan Unger,
| Business Development Manager for Computational Biology
| at Sun Microsystems.

| NCSA, too, has used VisAD and the Java 3D API.
| NCSA is a research organization and part of the
| National Computational Science Alliance (the Alliance).
| Its facilities house some of the most advanced
| virtual environment laboratories in academia,
| including three different projection-based display
| systems -- the CAVE, the ImmersaDesk and the Infinity Wall --
| which enable researchers to literally get inside their
| data. This often leads to a better understanding of
| the data than would have been possible otherwise.

NAVE CAVE -- Paul Fishwick: Caves - a cheaper version =
  ====================================================
|
| I am seeking solutions to the problem of viewing
|
| VRML worlds on a NAVE.
|
| The overview of the NAVE can be found at
|
| http://www.digitalworlds.ufl.edu/research/nave/default.asp
|
| There is one host PC that sends position and orientation
| information (of the avatar) to each of 3 PCs, each of
| which projects an image onto a panel.
|
| With 3 panels, one obtains a panoramic view.
|
| The only problem that we have now is that the
| default software to make this work revolves
| around a package called "SVE" (which uses OpenGL).
|
| We'd like to make the NAVE available to the
| display of VRML (and X3D). This would open the
| NAVE to many more applications.

Paul, have you checked out the above system ?

It sounds like they solved similar problems and
found a rather good solution: using a
VRML plug-in Viewer in a browser with ActiveX
  would appear to be retro.

| NIST delves into pervasive computing
| ------------------------------------
|
| Pervasive-computing systems could make
| conference rooms brainy, according to the
| Smart Space Laboratory researchers at the
| National Institute of Standards and Technology.
| ...
| The meeting room generates about 1G per minute
| or 60G per hour of data from five steerable
| Sony EVI-D30 videoconferencing cameras ...
| [and] about 200 low-cost ... microphones ...
| The open-source clustering software can harness
| up to 24 computers, Stanford said.
|
| NIST has made the source code and
| documentation available for download at

Sandy, could you post this to the VMRL list,
keep in mind the VRML Loaders were a gift from
Sun to Web3d.org. This is about 3d worlds, VRML,
CAVES, and in reply to Paul Fishwick's plea,
oh, and it's also about some work at the NIST.
