Sad and unfortunate news, but honestly not surprising.  I appreciate
xml.apache.org's effort to make these things open source, but I've
personally had a number of painful experiences with a lot of the code from
that site (e.g. Xerces Java 1).  Things are getting better though -- Xerces
Java 2, for example, so far looks very promising.  Most open source or
otherwise free software (j3d.org being the clear exception to the rule, of
course :P ) seems to need a long lead time to mature enough to be suitable
for real-world apps, and Batik is relatively new.
