This is a summary of what I presented at the JavaOne Java 3D BOF.
I thought someone would have brought it up sooner. Here is our plan
going forward.
Java 3D 1.3
-----------
We are just a couple of weeks away from FCS code freeze. We really
appreciate all the feedback so far, and we have fixed a number of the
bugs reported. Please continue to give us feedback. We are getting
close to the finish.
Java 3D 1.3.1
-------------
After Java 3D 1.3, we will start work on Java 3D 1.3.1. This release
will be focused on quality and performance. So, if we didn't get to
your favorite bug, or if you have a performance case that you would
like to see addressed, let us know. We will try to address it in 1.3.1.
There will be no new core API in 1.3.1. We hope to release Java 3D 1.3.1
around the end of this calendar year, beginning of next.
Java 3D 1.4
-----------
In parallel with Java 3D 1.3.1, I will be leading a new JSR to add new
features to Java 3D. These will be targetted at Java 3D 1.4. It will
be a full JSR, where we assemble an expert group to define the new API.
Major additions will be considered for Java 3D 1.4. Some of the high
level features that are currently being considered for 1.4 include:
- Programmable Shading (Vertex/Pixel Shaders)
- Stencil buffer support
- Limited Extensibility
- Render to Texture
There are many other features that we are considering. If you have
suggestions, please let me know. The JSR for Java 3D 1.4 will be filed
by Siggraph (July 21). The rest of this year will be spent defining the
API for Java 3D 1.4. Then we will begin the implementation work. Of course,
some of this work may overlap.
Since the Java 3D team is smaller than it once was, we are looking for
other ways to finish all the implementation work for Java 3D 1.4. One
thing we are looking at is engaging the community and expert group to
provide implementation resources as well as API expertise. We will still
develope the TCK and deliver the Java 3D 1.4 product, as well as lead
the architecture of any 1.4 implementation tasks. If you are interested
in this process, let me know as well.
I think that recaps what I presented at JavaOne, and shows the roadmap
for the next 18-24 months.
If you have any questions, let me know.
