some on this list have heard this all before, but here it is again we first showed java3d to jonathan ives's group at apple in late 1998 -- on a win nt box, very embarrassing we used it to produce a real-time cad conferencing system http://www.webscopeinc.com ives & co. seemed impressed and asked to try it out -- on a mac ... we shipped betas in 1999 we shipped commercial versions of our product in 2000 we shipped the fourth full release in spring 2001 we died in the summer of 2001, but the product is still viable, in my opinion -- although not on a mac it runs fine in virtual pc on a fast g4 under os 8 & 9, and probably ok or better under X i passed on commenting on the subject the last 10 times, but couldn't ignore it this time you know all of the people to talk to, it doesn't matter -- we begged, yelled, cajoled, begged, etc. it's vaguely possible that apple told developers at wwdc that j3d is coming, but nda fear has prevented the news from getting out ... ha, good one... you can move forward, thinking, "they've waited for 4 years, they can't possibly screw this up any longer" and you might think, "every other java 2 platform offers java 3d, surely it can't be that expensive or that difficult," contemplating all versions of win, plus solaris, aix, and hpux, and linux, and irix ... your phone and palm will have java 3d before macs, at current rates... could show up on the newton... and that is why gl4java is a non-starter -- java is about cross-platform, and *all* of the other platforms already fully support java 3d, have for more than a year, if not four, and represent 95+% of the market why this point continues to escape some on the apple list is clear -- those guys are desperate, too or you might think, "apple is completely insane and self-destructive, and ... " [complete the sentence, it has too many pertinent endings to list them all here] but whatever you do, don't hold your breath, or make plans because it's obvious that 'they can't ignore it any longer, with so many requests' ... good luck -- b.rad At 10:56 AM -0500 6/4/02, Simeon H.K.
