Still, it will probably be better to use single PointArray. Use vertex colors for different colors of stars. You might also want to think about using some kind of particle system (using textured quads) for distant lods - you could add more advanced effects thanks to that. Make sure that you reuse geometry for planets/stars. Also, be sure to use some kind of simplification for ships, similar to stars. Textured quads can really make a good impression here for sizes in range of few pixels.
