Title: RE: [JAVA3D] swing toolbar flicker

Hey folks,

I have also experienced flickering of Java Swing GUIs when using Java 3D, and there was a short thread about it back in December on this list (you can search the list archive for the word "flicker").  The graphics chipset that was giving me trouble was the ATI RAGE MOBILITY which is (or was) fairly common in laptops.

It was suggested to me that disabling a certain display setting in Windows will fix the problem, but I never got my hands on the offending machine in order to test it.  Specifically, try disabling the option "Show windows contents while dragging" in the Display Properties panel, under the Effects tab (for Windows 2000).

This may or may not make a difference, but give it a shot, and let us know if that helps.

Your problems seem like what I've experienced on some new computers we got.
Swing GUI component updating is so bad that my program is practically
unusable -- intense flickering (alternating between the current state of the
gui and some other state) -- or blanking out. Non-Java3D programs seem fine,
however.

Furthermore, the following J3D demo applets all exhibited the same poor
behavior : GeometryByReferenceTest, ImageComponentByReferenceTest,
InterleavedTest, PickTest, TextureByReference.

I also noticed that creating and opening a window (from within the java
program) while a Canvas3D is showing immediately crashes the jvm with:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
Unexpected Signal:EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION occurred at ...
Function Name=(N/A)
Library = C:\WINNT\system32\nvoglnt.dll
etc.

I suspect a bad driver may be the culprit but I won't really be able to
investigate it until one of these computers is actually on my desk.

Hello-

The flickering seems to have resolved itself when I removed the
KeyNavigatorBehavior from my BranchGroup, but my JMenuBar only appears on
every other click- i.e. click to display and it shows items, go to the next
menu or hide and show again, and the menu is greyed out.  Repeat, and it's
there again.

I noticed it also did it in the PrintCanvas3D demo.

Are these known issues and are there workarounds?

Subject: [JAVA3D] swing toolbar flicker

Hello-
I have a Swing applet, with a JMenuBar and a JToolBar.  I have a Canvas3D in
a JPanel with a simple ColorCube object in it.  I've called
JPopupMenu.setDefaultLightWeightPopupEnabled(false).

On a Win 2000 machine, with jdk 1.4, on a mouseover of the toolbar or
menubar, the toolbar and menubar both start flickering like crazy.  On a Win
XP, with jdk 1.4, the mouse flickers when it's over the Canvas.  On both
systems, when I open up a JFileChoose, the file chooser box flickers.

I've read the FAQs, and searched google and the archives and can't find a
solution.  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!

-Ed
